WEST LEIGH JUNIOR SCHOOL
WHAT'S IN THE NEWS
We believe that teaching the children about current affairs is vitally important. Each class holds a weekly session called 'What's in the News', where we explore a topical issue from the world news that week. The children debate, discuss and share their opinions about the news stories within these weekly lessons and are all very knowledgeable about what is happening in the world as a result. These lessons ensure that our children can keep up to date with current news in a sensitive, yet informative way. The children are able to form their own views and opinions about world events; vital skills for the adults of the future. We teach the children about reliable sources of information and how to evaluate what they read - in this era of fake news, where information on social media, accurate or not, goes rebounding around the world unchallenged in seconds, it is so important for children to understand that the source of their information must be a valid one, that is independent, adequately researched and balanced.
