WEST LEIGH JUNIOR SCHOOL
SWIMMING
Swimming lessons are taught by our fully qualified and experienced swimming teachers.
The children swim all year round. Each class is grouped and each group has 25 minutes swimming time every week.
All children must wear black swimwear (no bikinis or board shorts) and a swimming hat. In Years 3 and 4 goggles are not to be worn unless the children have obtained their 100m and then under the discretion of the teacher. There may be medical exceptions. All children in Years 5 and 6 are permitted to wear them during school lessons. No earrings are to be worn for swimming in accordance with the school’s PE policy.
All year groups are tested twice a year, giving them a chance to obtain swimming badges. We are strong believers in stroke work so badges need to be obtained with the correct swimming technique as well as stamina. We aim to take Year 6 to Belfairs swimming pool to gain higher distance awards and for deep water experience. At the end of Year 6 we hold a house swimming gala for the whole year group.
All year groups learn the three main strokes with butterfly introduced to the more advanced.
Water skills are taught to all year groups, for example forward / backward roll, floating etc along with the use of the pace clock.
The children take part in 15 minute timed swims twice a year so that a measure can be made of their fitness.
All year groups have the opportunity to swim in clothes for personal lifesaving practice.
Termly the children also have the chance to play water polo and have a supervised fun swim using our large choice of pool toys. At Christmas the whole school takes part in aquaerobics, which the children greatly enjoy - especially when they see their teachers dancing around!
Every child in the school is timed on their swimming strokes and the fastest are invited to attend early morning swimming training in preparation for national and local competitions.
