Year 4 Visit to Colchester Castle

As part of their Connected Curriculum topic on The Romans, Year 4 were lucky enough to visit Colchester Castle. From their impeccable behaviour and their vibrant enthusiasm, they truly were a credit to West Leigh.

As historians, the children were given the opportunity to discover and examine sources throughout the museum. The vast array of activities throughout the day allowed the children to become immersed and transported into the lives of the Romans. As some of the children investigated artefacts, others were given the opportunity to dress as Romans and Celts.

The most challenging yet rewarding activity allowed the children to showcase their design skills, use memory recall and work as a team within time constraints. They were tasked with building an Iron Age hut and a Roman home. All the children rose to the challenge with determination and vigour!

Finally, the children were struck with awe and wonder as we travelled to the vaults beneath the castle. They were engaged and enthused as our classroom learning came to life and we discovered the history of Colchester Castle, Boudica and Roman Britain.

Thank you to all the parents who offered help and to those who supported us on this trip. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
