Healthy Cooking - Pizza Swirls

Mrs Atkin and Mrs Rodger are going to be bringing you some wonderful healthy cooking videos over the coming weeks. They are kicking things off with yummy pizza swirls.

Ingredients:

250g self-rising flour

1 tsp Baking powder

75g margarine

¼ pint semi-skimmed milk

Filling:

100g grated mature cheddar

Tomato puree

100g chopped bacon, chicken or ham

Italian herb seasoning

Cream cheese

Chopped onion

Method:

  • Preheat your oven to 180C/ gas mark 4

  • Gently combine the flour, baking powder and margarine in a bowl. Rub them together until they resemble breadcrumbs

  • Gradually add the milk and use a palette knife to stir the mixture

  • Once the dough begins to stick to the knife use your hands and bring the dough together

  • Roll out on a floured board

  • Spread the tomato puree onto the dough

  • Sprinkle over the remaining ingredients

  • Roll up the dough so it looks like a Swiss roll

  • Cut into slices and place on a tray lined with baking paper

  • Cook for 10-15 minutes until golden brown

Alternatives:

You can change some of the filling to make different swirls – you could use pesto instead of tomato puree, you can substitute basil, tomato and peppers for cheese and ham. You could even try cooked vegetables as a filling such as carrot, leek or courgette.

The swirls can also be a sweet treat by using apple and sultanas as a filling.
