Year 5/6 Aquathlon
On Wednesday 27th March, 8 children from Year 5 and 6 took part in the Southend Aquathlon at Garon Park. The event consisted of a 100m swim followed by a 1.2km cross country race. The children began with their swim in the pool and put in some fantastic performances. The faster the time they swam, the more of a head start they would gain for the 1.2km race. Every second counted! As they were lined up in positions for the race, it was clear to see that the West Leigh team had strong swimmers to gain the places but the team event then came down to the placings after the run. Considering the children had just swum 100m, the determination on their faces was clear as they began their race and chased down some of the runners in front of them. The girls finished 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th overall and the boys finished 4th, 5th, 6th and 13th overall. Their high placings in the final standings enabled them to collate the lowest score of all the teams which gave them 1st place. Each individual in the team put in an outstanding performance and demonstrated perseverance and superb endurance to complete the race. They should all be very proud of their achievement as we all are at school.
