Tennis Festival
To coincide with the Wimbledon Championships, West Leigh Junior School held a ‘Mini Tennis Festival’ at Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club on Monday 9th July. The tournament was run by head coach, Graham Boosey, as part of the LTA Team Challenge initiative.
54 children from the school enjoyed a full afternoon of tennis. At any time there were up to 12 matches taking place. Pupils were arranged into small groups to play ‘round robins’ so that all participants played at least 3 matches. The winner being the player who reached 10 points first. Throughout the afternoon there were some extremely close matches.
The year 6 competition was decided on points from the ‘round robin’ match play, Congratulations to Imogen O'Neill for winning and to Emily Chaston for second place, with a special mention to Freddie Dawson for great sportsmanship.
The pupils with the highest scores after the ‘round robin’ stage, in years 3, 4 and 5, then played quarter finals, semi- finals and finals. Again, there were some close matches, with many players only separated by one point. The winner of the year 3 competition was Joseph Burdett, with James Byford runner up. In year 4 the first place went to Charlie Cosgrove, with Milo Bilanges in second position. The year 5 winner was Maya Sinclair-House, with Hannah Rosewell in second place.
Many congratulations to all the children from West Leigh for demonstrating excellent tennis skills, super sportsmanship and for being great ambassadors for the school. Thank you to the parents, grandparents and carers for supporting the pupils and to the members of Westcliff Lawn Tennis Club for helping to organise the event.
