Year 5 and 6 Football competition

The Year 5 and 6 football team competed in the Southend Primary School Sports Association Boys’ Football Competition on Wednesday 2nd November 2016. The group stage got off to a tense start with all five teams finishing their first game 0-0; the boys had a number of shots at the goal but were unable to hit the back of the net. In the second game after going 0-1 down the boys pushed even harder to get the win with final result being 2-1. This boosted the confidence and energy of the team, helping them achieve an amazing 4-0 win in the third game. In the last game of the group stages the boys pushed hard for a goal, with the game ending in a 0-0 draw. With two games still to be played in the group the boys watched on anticipating the final result. We finished on equal points with Thorpe Hall, putting it down to goal difference meaning the boys finished top of the group, qualifying for the super 15s. After lunch the boys played another four games, achieving a 1-0 win in the first game, followed by another 1-0 win in the second game. In the third and fourth games the boys put in all there effort to score a goal but unfortunately both games finished 0-0. The boys then had a nail biting wait whilst watching the last game being played in order to find out if they had done enough to get to the semi-final. With the last game ending in a draw, it put us top of the group, qualifying for the semi-finals. In the semi-final game the boys put in immense effort but as the game got to the closing stages Chalkwell managed to get a goal. With only 30 seconds of match time left, the boys tried as hard as they could to get an equalizer but, at the final whistle, it was 0-1 defeat. But it wasn’t over yet as the boys had one more game to play, the 3rd – 4th playoff. With the boys putting the loss behind them, they focused on the game in hand. Despite pushing hard for a goal throughout the game, the final whistle was blown with the game as a 0-0 draw. That meant the match went to extra time with the golden goal rule applied (the first team to score wins). The boys continued to put maximum effort in to the game but sadly Fairways manage to get a goal they needed to finish 3rd. The boys put in an incredible performance throughout the day and did a remarkable job to finish 4th out of the 30 schools that played in the competition. The boys represented the school with superb sportsmanship and behaviour and should feel very confident when approaching their upcoming league campaign.
